How to get an internship at DRDO?

"The country doesn't deserve anything less than success from us. Let us aim for success". ~ A P J Abdul Kalam.

The most respectful thing one can do is to serve his/her own country and to provide most value to it.

DRDO-, is one of those esteemed and reputable organisations which comes under the ministry of defense. Working at such an organisation in itself is an experience that you will cherish all your life. But getting inside such an organization includes some procedures, that I will be discussing with you as part of my experience getting selected in the organisation and working as a project trainee at the Centre For Artificial Intelligence & Robotics Laboratory(CAIR) of Defense Research & Development Organisation.

I'll be dividing the procedures into 3 phases and will discuss each phase step by step

  • Step-1(Choosing your laboratory)

DRDO has 52 laboratories all over India. These laboratories functions on different kinds of fields in the domain of science and robotics. Every laboratory specializes in its own specific field, for example, CAIR laboratory specializes in the "AI & Robotics" field and INMAS specializes in "Nuclear medicine and allied science"-related field. So, in order to work at DRDO, you need to first figure out which laboratory relates to your research interest/domain and where you'd likely be able to gain much relevant experience and skill set.

  • Step-2(Writing your Cover letter )

This is a very crucial process because this will be the answer to the biggest question " WHY".

1. Why should such an organization take you as an intern?

2. Why should they give you the opportunity to work on one of their projects?

3. Why should they consider you as an apt candidate out of all the applications they get?

These are some of the questions that would arise in your mind even before you start writing your mail, and that is what you need to be ready to answer in the most confident and honest way, and that's because when they go through your cover letter and resume then they'll get to know:-

  1. The reason they should be taking you as an intern is the skillsets should match their research at present.

  2. They should see what you have achieved in the long run and how determined you were throughout your academic cycle in that particular field that you're interested in to work with them in their respective laboratories

  3. They should get a glance by just looking at your cv that you are worthy enough for them to take an interview of yours and have a conversation with you to see whether you stand by all the qualities that you've mentioned in your resume.

Step-3( Sending the mail & interview call)

Now that you've built your cv, you'll have to write a mail telling them about yourself and what intrigues you about the laboratory or the organization per se. Also, mention some of the domains you are interested in by pointing them in your mail body. Mention the reason as to why you are interested in them, you can get a hint of some of the ongoing research from Drdo's official website, do check it out.

After curating the mail, you need to attach your cv and resume with it and then you need to send the mail to the respective director of the particular laboratory of DRDO, where you are interested to work, by checking the director's mail online. In my case, it was cair, so I wrote and sent the mail to the director, cair, Drdo.

After this you'll have to wait for the evaluation to happen as your application might go to the desk of several brilliant scientists and then whichever scientist's research relates withyou, you will get a follow-up mail from that scientist or his/her assistant, stating that the interview is scheduled for the particular date.

  • Interview Outline

The scientist will ask basic to medium-level questions from your cv ( it may vary from scientist to scientist as per their requirements), resume, and also general questions related to your subject matter. He/she may also ask a conceptual question to check your knowledge broadly and if they are happy with the discussion and find you worthy you may hear from their assistant back through mail, with the confirmation. And after this, my friend Congratulations!! would be in order for you to work with one of the brilliant minds of the nation!! , indeed a great opportunity.

Conclusion

This sums up pretty much the procedure to intern at DRDO. I urge you to give it a shot once in your life without thinking that you are not good enough because maybe you might be thinking very little of yourself but even you might not know what value you could provide them and what you could get from them in the early stage of your life as a college student. The level of confidence that you'll gain after working with the scientist is a next-level feeling that will stay with you that is why you should definitely give it a try rather than regretting it in the coming future.

I wish you all the best. Feel free to ask anything about the procedure I would love to help you all with whatever knowledge I was able to acquire under the guidance of the scientist at DRDO.

Thank you

Jai Hind!!
